Respond to a disaster

When a tornado warning is issued

Find shelter during a tornado warning at home, in a public building or outdoors.

At homeOut and aboutIn a car

In an emergency, contact local emergency services and follow official instructions.

First, check this

When a tornado warning is issued, seek shelter immediately and follow local alerts. [5]

Inside a sturdy building

  • Go to a basement, a designated safe room or a small interior room without windows on the lowest floor. Protect your head and stay away from windows. [5] [6]
  • At school, work or a shopping center, go to the designated shelter and follow staff instructions. Avoid large open rooms and glass. [5]

Outside or in a vehicle

  • If time permits, get into a nearby sturdy building or storm shelter. A car, tent or mobile home is not a safe tornado shelter. [5]
  • If you cannot reach a safe shelter, consult local emergency guidance for the situation. Do not shelter under an overpass. [5] [6]
