Respond to a disaster
When a hurricane is approaching
Prepare for hurricane winds, storm surge and flooding, and follow local evacuation instructions.
At homeOut and aboutEvacuating
In an emergency, contact local emergency services and follow official instructions.
First, check this
Check local alerts and evacuation instructions early. If authorities order an evacuation, leave immediately. [1] [2]
Before the storm
- Find out whether you are in an evacuation zone and plan where to go and how to contact your household. Prepare medicines, drinking water, food, a flashlight and a way to receive updates. [1]
- Hurricanes and typhoons are tropical cyclones named differently according to where they occur. Both can bring destructive winds and flooding; follow local forecasts rather than relying on the name alone. [3]
When the storm arrives
- If you are not ordered to evacuate, shelter in a small interior room on the lowest level, away from windows and glass doors. Follow local instructions, especially if flooding or storm surge is a risk. [2]
- A lull can be the eye of the storm. Winds may return from the opposite direction; keep following official updates. [2]
After the storm
- Return after an evacuation only when local officials say it is safe. Avoid flooded roads and fallen power lines. [4]
