Respond to a disaster

When wildfire smoke reaches your area

Follow fire alerts and reduce smoke exposure when it is safe to stay indoors.

At homeOut and aboutEvacuating

In an emergency, contact local emergency services and follow official instructions.

First, check this

If authorities tell you to evacuate because of a wildfire, leave immediately. Follow local guidance about when it is safe to return. [7]

If you are not told to evacuate

  • Check local air-quality and fire updates. Stay in a safe indoor place with cleaner air when smoke is present; an air cleaner can help reduce indoor particles. [8]
  • Closing windows can reduce smoke, but an overheated room can be dangerous. If you cannot keep your home safely cool, seek a cooler place with cleaner air where available. [9]

If you need to go outside

  • Reduce time outdoors when possible. A properly fitted N95 respirator can reduce exposure to smoke particles, but it does not protect against smoke gases. Follow local health guidance. [8]
  • Children, pregnant people and people with heart or lung conditions may need extra care. Discuss symptoms or specific concerns with a healthcare professional. [8]
